Even the publishers of Red Dead Redemption were surprised by the game’s success as Take 2 has reported sales of almost 7 million units since the game’s May launch. Red Dead and the recently-released Mafia II will have to keep 2K-loving action gamers satiated for the rest of the year, as L.A. Noire has been pushed into next year.

Take 2 reported revenue of $354 million for the quarter running from May 1 to July 31 almost quadrupling the revenue earned during the same period last year — $94.9 million in 2009. The jump was largely attributed to Red Dead Redemption’s success in the marketplace, though Grand Theft Auto IV, Episodes from Liberty City, NBA 2K10, and Borderlands were all cited as factors in the growth. Digital downloads also made up a lot of the profits, leading the company to reveal a DLC-heavy release slate for the rest of 2010.

The company has seven DLC packs from four games slated for the rest of the year — Red Dead Redemption, Mafia II, BioShock 2, and Borderlands — alongside seven retail releases. One game that won’t hit this year despite initial predictions is Rockstar’s next open-world game, L.A. Noire. The game is now slated to come out during the first half of 2011. The company also slated the recently-revealed BioShock Infinite for a 2012 release.

GamePro is currently listening in on Take 2’s quarterly conference call and will report any further announcements from the company.
