Apple revealed new models of almost all of its major products and upcoming software updates at its annual September press conference. Some of the event’s highlights include the first public showing of Game Center, Epic’s upcoming iPhone game Project Sword, and the first iPod model to include a camera.

Apple shows Game Center & Epic shows first iPhone game at Apple event

While previously touted at past press events, the Game Center feature for the iPhone/iPod/iPad devices was finally shown to the press. The Game Center will will be a downloadable App that functions as an API for the platform’s many games. Game Center will allow easier access to online mulitplayer and the ability to see what games your friends are playing and how they’re performing. The Game Center App will be available on select iPhone and iPod Touch models starting next week.

Attendees at Apple’s event and the select few that were able to stream the conference properly from Safari were able to observe Game Center in action as Epic Games debuted its upcoming title for Apple platforms in the form of Project Sword — an action role-playing game. After Epic President Mike Capps was downed during a fierce battle, an Game Center achievement popped up, showing the integration of the API in the new game. The final version of the code-named game will be due out before the end of the year.

Meanwhile, amongst the throng of new products revealed at the conference — including an iPod Shuffle that brings back buttons, an iPod Nano that will now include a touch-screen, and an HD-streaming Apple TV — Apple CEO Steve Jobs showed off the next iteration of iPod Touch hardware. Due out this holiday season in a $230 8GB model, a $300 32GB model, and a $400 64GB model, the next iPod Touch will include the higher-resolution display and increased motion control employed in the iPhone 4, as well as a single camera located near the device’s display. All three of the new features could lead to increased implementation in features in upcoming games as the installed base for the features grow.
