Social gaming site raising money for gulf relief
The gigantic leak that has been plaguing the gulf for weeks has finally been stopped, but the cleanup efforts are just beginning. Once gaming-themed social network is hoping to get fans talking about the problem and donating towards its solution.
When compared to the massive outpouring from the gaming industry for relief efforts in Haiti, the support for cleaning up the millions of gallons spilled in the Gulf of Mexico. This is largely due to the fact that the former was a natural disaster while the latter is largely the fault of a large oil company. Regardless of who’s to blame, the fact remains that cleanup efforts will be costly and any contribution to the cause is much-needed.
Once community currently working towards gulf relief is Gaia Online, the Japanese-focused, English-speaking forum and social gaming network. Shown below is the “Toxic Blob” that Gaia users will be able to purchase over the next ten days. Unlike the many animals that fell victim to the spill, the blob can be cleaned off, granting the player one of the cute animals shown below. A portion of the proceeds from this item will be donated to relief efforts. Gaia has run a similar promotion this year, raising over $10,000 for victims of the Haiti earthquake.
As we learn more information about Gaia Online’s fund-raising efforts, we’ll update this article. If any of you readers hear of other companies raising money for the spill, please comment or email us, and we’ll add them to the article.
