Google’s got a lot of work to do to catch up to Apple’s robust App Store — nobody knows this better than game developers. OpenFeint, the company behind several iPhone games’ social network capabilities, makes a little easier with a new push onto Android phones.

To start, OpenFeint plans to launch Android social networking service for all its current clients later this summer. In addition to basic SDK stuff devs need, OpenFeint also offers a game discovery system for the platform, which will hopefully simplify the process of finding and buying games on Google’s would-be iPhone killer.

OpenFeint kicks off its new Android service with several games from publishers Hudson Soft, Glu Mobile, Digital Chocolate, and a handful of indie devs. Speaking to GamePro in a media briefing session, OpenFeint’s Eros Resmini said there were other big-name developers in talks to work with his company on Android projects. He declined to name names, however.

Resmini explained that while not as robust as Apple’s App Store, the Android platform is a promising place for developers. With the game discovery system in particular, he said OpenFeint hopes to change the landscape of game development on Android, whether by increasing the number of first-time mobile developers or making it easier for iPhone devs to port their wares. OpenFeint is not, he said, backing off on its iPhone service.
